Nicholas has many years’ experience of the opera world.  After studying art and design, he chose to pursue a career in singing, which grew from the Montepulciano Arts Festival in the early 1980s and led in 1993 to a full time contract at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.  He formed his own opera company Opera A La Carte in 1993 for which he has produced, directed and designed over 40 productions as well as devising masterclasses and education programmes within the UK and abroad.

Since 2004 he has regularly lectured in Opera Studies at Birkbeck, University of London.  He left the Royal Opera House in 2006 to work on a project run by Streetwise Opera and to devote more time to Opera a la Carte.  In 2007 he participated in the Clore Cultural Leadership Programme and in 2009 joined Davies Music and Concert Directory International developing opera work for their singers.

In March 2012 he formed Regents Opera.

Ben was born in Staffordshire, and was educated at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, and was then Organ Scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge.His operatic experiences began in New York when he was asked to repetiteur for Salome for the One World Symphony, just three days before rehearsals began. After this baptism of fire, he was then asked back to repetiteur and chorus-master Peter Grimes and Elektra.He returned to London in 2007, and on meeting Fiona Williams, conducted La Cenerentola in St John’s Fulham. He has since worked with Opera de Baugé as repetiteur on La traviata and chorus master for Rigoletto and Die Zauberflöte, English Chamber Opera as assistant conductor on Cosi fan tutte, Focus Opera as assistant conductor on Don Giovanni and Opera Links as pianist for a workshop performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream. He has recently completed his MMus at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and whilst doing that worked on Parsifal Act II with Fulham Opera and conducted L’elisir d’amore for Chelmsford Opera.
